In 1965 Marsha P Wilson a Black Trans woman sparked the gay rights movement. Today Black Trans women are abused and murdered at a disproportionate rate. Black Trans women live in fear.
Our Blackness bonds us to the history of hate on this soil.
Today rainbow shades of people are marching in the streets to combat systemic racism and violence against Transgender women and men. The number of fatalities has risen from 331 in 2019 to 350 in 2020 and 375 in 2021. Black Trans women are being routinely murdered in Chicago.
The Black trans community is under assault. At TVPC we do our best to provide a safe space for members of the Black transgender community. Below we mourn lives loss due to violence in recent years. Unfortunately, the list is far from complete. The victims were real people with real lives. Their lives mattered. We will continue to fight against a system steeped in systemic oppression that did not see their value. We send love and light to their friends and family.
